Thrissur Pooram is one of Kerala's most internationally documented festivals, but the sheer density of elephants and synchronized percussion in one town square remains a genuinely singular spectacle, not easily replicated elsewhere.

Two rival temple groups, Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi, have staged a friendly but fiercely competitive Pooram rivalry for over two centuries, each fielding their own lineup of caparisoned elephants and percussion ensembles in an event that draws visitors from across Kerala and beyond.

The 48-Hour Timeline

  1. Day 0 — Arrival

    • Fly into Cochin International Airport (COK)
    • Road transfer to Thrissur (~1–1.5 hrs)
    • Check into accommodation — book well ahead, as Thrissur's hotels fill up fast for Pooram
    • Evening: explore Thekkinkadu Maidan before the crowds build

  2. Day 1 — Peak Experience

    • Morning: temple rituals begin at Vadakkunnathan Temple
    • Afternoon: the main elephant procession (Ilanjithara Melam and Madathil Varavu) draws the largest daytime crowds
    • Photographer note: the afternoon procession offers the clearest sightlines of the elephant lineup before evening crowd density peaks
    • Family note: afternoon hours are intensely crowded and loud (percussion ensembles run for hours) — plan accordingly for young children
    • Late night into early morning: the two temple factions compete with increasingly elaborate parasol displays (Kudamattam), building toward dawn

  3. Day 2 — Departure / Wind-down

    • Pre-dawn: the Pooram fireworks display, a major public spectacle in its own right
    • Morning: crowds thin as the main event concludes
    • Return road transfer to Cochin for onward travel

Thrissur town has a range of budget lodges, though during Pooram week prices rise sharply and rooms near Thekkinkadu Maidan sell out first — booking at least a month ahead is common advice.

The afternoon elephant procession offers the most open sightlines; a vantage point on one of the buildings ringing the maidan (arranged in advance) is commonly recommended over ground-level shooting given the crowd density.

Family

This is a loud, long, extremely crowded event — the percussion alone runs for hours and the main spectacle stretches into the early morning; better suited to older children who can handle noise and crowds than to very young kids.

Luxury Explorer

A small number of hotels and private residences overlooking Thekkinkadu Maidan offer premium viewing balconies for the procession — the most comfortable way to watch without standing in the ground-level crowd, but these need to be arranged well in advance.

  • Dress modestly when entering temple grounds; footwear is typically removed before entering inner temple areas
  • The elephants are working animals in a religious context — keep a respectful distance and avoid sudden loud noises or flash photography directly at them
  • Expect very tight crowd conditions for hours at a stretch — this is not an event with easy mid-event exits from the best viewing spots
